Ridder Orde Van Oranje Nassau



Ridder Orde Van Oranje is the appreciation title from Dutch Colonial means merit sign star for one of personage Muhammadiyah, he is Kyai Haji Hisyam. He was valued deserving well of Indonesia society in education development. In Kyai Haji Hisyam period, Muhammadiyah has so fast developing, in the end of 1932, Muhammadiyah has 103 Volkschool, 47 Standaardschool, 69 Hollands Inlandse School (HIS), and 25 Schakelschool, that is a five years school that will devotail to MULO (Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs, equivalent with Junior High School today) from the student who graduate from Vervolgschool or Standaardschool class V. All that Muhammadiyah school use dutch language as the introduction language. Muhammadiyah school on that era being education institute for autochthonous that can compete with dutch school developing, Katolik, and Protestan school.
            Kyai Haji Hisyam was born in Kauman Yogyakarta on 10 November 1883 and died on 20 Mei 1945. Even he did not fell the liberty days on 17 Agustus 1945, he has many contribution for Indonesia freedom. He is the third leader of Muhammadiyah. He was chose and established as the leader of Muhammadiyah in the 23 Muhammadiyah congress at Yogyakarta 1934. He is one of K.H. Ahmad Dahlan direct student, and also prominent abdi dalem Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. On 1935, he was chose again as the leader of Muhammadiyah in the 24 Muhammadiyah congress at Banjarmasin. In the 25 Muhammadiyah congress at Batavia (Jakarta), he was chose again as the leader of Muhammadiyah. Just three times he taken hold of Muhammadiyah leader.
            In Kyai Haji Hisyam period, the orderliness of administration and management are good. He is more focuse in education and teaching developing, not only religion education but also public education such as in dutch school. It can be seen from his children education. Two his sons studied being a teacher, called a bevoegd and be a teacher in HIS Met de Qur’an Muhammadiyah Kudus and Yogyakarta. One of his son graduate from Hogere Kweekschool in Purworejo, and one his son graduate from Europese Kweekschool in Surabaya. Both of school were built by Dutch colonial government for the next teacher who will teach in HIS Gubernemen.
            In Kyai Haji Hisyam period, Muhammadiyah has open the elementary school three years (volkschool or vilage school) after manner of rules and regulations such as in volkschool gubernemen. After it, was open also Muhammadiyah vervolgschool as the continuance. That is the reason why after it many Muhammadiyah volkschool and vervolgschool in Indonesia, especially Jawa. When Dutch colonial government open standaardschool, that is six years school, Muhammadiyah also open a school like it to. Moreover, Muhammadiyah was build Muhammadiyah Hollands Inlandsche School Met de Qur’an for make a compete or effort as like as Katolik society that was built Hollands Inlandsche School Met de Bijbel.
            Kyai Haji Hisyam always thinks about how Muhammadiyah education not defeated from Dutch colonial government education. He thinks in order that autochthonous if want study not only must go to Dutch colonial government school, Indonesia also have school for study. Even it should fulfill many difficult rules and regulations, in the end Muhammadiyah school got confession and similarity from Dutch colonial government.
            In developing of Muhammadiyah education, Kyai Haji Hisyam make a cooperation with Dutch colonial government that Muhammadiyah prepared get financial assistance from Dutch colonial government, even the total just a little and not equal with government helping to Kristen schools at that time. From that case is the reason Kyai Haji Hasyim and Muhammadiyah get a poignant stricture from Taman Siswa and Syarikat Islam at that time leveled against non-cooperative politics. However, Kyai Haji Hisyam has a mind of own that government subsidy is the tax that was took from Indonesia society, especially Islam society. With that subsidy, Muhammadiyah can use it for develop Muhammadiyah education that in the end also can develop and brought up Indonesia. Accept that subsidy is better than refuse, because if that subsidy refusing, so that subsidy will be shift to the Dutch colonial government school and only make a strong Dutch colonialisme position.
            We can take the conclution and lesson from this Muhammadiyah personage. Kyai Haji Hisyam has an amazing dream and big effort to make Indonesia better, to make Indonesia did not defeated from Dutch colonial government. He focuses in one case, education. From that focus, he gets the appreciation from Dutch colonial government. He has a good knowladge in religion, religion is the pondation for any things in our life.
